Each day, a person breathes about 35 pounds of air and takes about 20,000 breaths! That’s why it’s important to take care of our air. Air monitoring is a vital component in protecting the health and well being of central Indiana residents.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works through its Office of Environmental Services closely monitors the region’s air quality. The data collected is provided to state and federal officials to ensure that the region’s air quality is continually improving. The information on the following pages will provide you with a historical and current perspective on the region’s air quality.
