Action Steps for Kids

Adults aren't the only ones who can battle smog and soot. There are lots of things you can do as a kid that can help fight air pollution, like:

Talk to your friends and family about Knozone.
As a "kno-it-all," you know a lot about how to help clean the air. So spread the word! There are lots of things you can tell people to do. You can ask them to sign up for e-mail alerts on Knozone Action Days. You can tell them to call the Air Quality hotline at (317) 327-4AIR. Or just have them go to knozone.com for all sorts of information.

Take the bus or carpool with other friends to school.
Carpooling means two or more people share a ride to work or school. So carpooling or using mass transit (like your school bus) means fewer people are driving their cars. And "kno-it-alls" know that fewer cars mean less air pollution.

Play outdoors in the morning or evening during the summer.
Smog builds up during the day, especially when the sun is out and the wind isn't blowing. High levels of smog can irritate your lungs. Staying indoors during the afternoon will help keep you healthy.

Turn off the lights when you're not in your room.
Better yet, turn off your computer, stereos or video games when you're not using them. Why? Using less electricity reduces air pollution. Plus it saves your family money!

Riding your bike or walking short distances (with an adult's permission of course!).
The less time you spend in a car, the better for our air! Why? Auto exhaust (the smoke that comes out of the tailpipe of a car) not only releases soot into the air and but it also helps make smog.

Use hand tools when helping out in the garden.
Hand tools don't require any electricity. They don't release harmful exhaust or put a lot of dirt into the air. So the more we rely on hand tools in the garden, the cleaner our air.

Ask your school to start a recycling program.
Recycling paper, plastic, aluminum and other materials cuts energy use. This reduces air pollution and saves money.

Who knew that so much of what you do each day helps to clean the air?!?
